English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Use Red the Robot® as a unique and fun learning tool to help develop key skills in children who have English as an additional language. As EAL learners come from a wide variety of language and literacy backgrounds, Red the Robot® was designed to be a multicultural and genderless character. As children need to listen to the English language before attempting to say it, use Red to develop speaking and listening skills and let children with EAL become confident with common English words and understand what words look like.

Phase One complete set - A great literacy resource to enable EAL learners to recognise common words and phrases through simple sound and phonic activities. Follows the Letters and Sounds phonics programme so can be used simultaneously between native English speakers and children with EAL.

Phase Two complete set - Allow EAL learners to recognise phonemes and create connections between the sound and shape of letters. Includes High Frequency Words and simple grammatical sentence based listening activities. Follows the Letters and Sounds phonics programme so can be used simultaneously between native English speakers and children with EAL.

Phase Three complete set - Extend your EAL learners vocabulary to listen to graphemes and trickier phonemes. Includes simple reading and listening activities. Follows the Letters and Sounds phonics programme so can be used simultaneously between native English speakers and children with EAL.

Phase One activity cards - For use alongside Red the Robot®. In addition to the Phase One complete set, allow more than one copy of an activity card to be used at the same time. Ideal for children working in small groups or to allow children with EAL to have their own activity card. Can be used to allow children with EAL to familiarise themselves with a future task.

Phase Two activity cards - For use alongside Red the Robot®. In addition to the Phase Two complete set, allow more than one copy of an activity card to be used at the same time. Storytime Red the Robot® - Let children listen to exciting stories about Red the Robot®. Children can follow stories and programme the pages they wish to hear. Each page finishes with a special sound to remind the child to turn the page. The storybooks create an excellent opportunity to introduce shadow reading. There are high frequency words and phonemes on the bottom of the page to encourage reading and listening skills.

Storybooks - Listen to Red the Robot® reading a story, follow using the books and look at the pictures to develop basic storylines. Red the Robot® delivers stories in a fun and EAL friendly way. The storybooks create an excellent opportunity to introduce shadow reading. There are high frequency words and phonemes at the bottom of the page to initiate reading and listening skills.

Magic star Readers - Use to hear the magic of listening to Red the Robot® read a story or use as part of a fun bingo game with the interactive activity cards. These Magic Star Readers allows many children to use Reds?interactive activity cards and storybooks.

Red the Robot® CD Rom Let children with EAL independently match lower case to upper case letters, recognise rhyming patterns whilst introducing spoken simple phrases and key words. A simple programme that would be great as a plenary or independent learning session.

Talk Box complete set - Use puppets and the voice recorders to encourage speaking and listening skills in role play or as a one to one structured session. The four simple books are excellent for shadow reading and introducing simple phrases and words. Use the flashcards and talk box words to introduce new vocabulary with visual reminders.

Talk Box Red and Ray puppets and two voice recorders - Use to develop speaking and listening of key words and phrases and to initiate responses from less confident learners. Use the voice recorders to allow children to listen, copy and repeat words and simple phrases.

Talk box books - Engage children with EAL with simple familiar stories with repetition and humour. Children can look and discuss the pictures whilst an adult or classmate introduces new vocabulary. These colourful and hard wearing books are ideal to take home to allow children with EAL to familiarise themselves with a future task.
